Your Mood and Your Diabetes Diagnosis

Positive woman

It's not unusual for a person with diabetes to go through mood swings as they manage the condition. First, receiving a diagnosis can follow with feelings of anger, sadness and depression. There is a period of adjustment. Having diabetes means getting used to the new a way of living that may be uncomfortable at first.

But a person’s emotions may also rise and fall if blood sugar levels are extremely low or high. This is a good time to get in the habit of documenting your glucose levels, as well as your mood at that moment. Your doctor may need to make adjustments to your diabetes plan. If you are experiencing the following emotional symptoms, seek help from a health care professional.

  • Sad or worried
  • Guilty or worthless
  • Not interested in fun things
  • Not interested in sex
  • Tired more than normal
  • Sleeping longer or more often
  • Having thoughts of suicide
