Choosing a College Major

The good news is, you’ve been accepted into the college or university of your choice. But the bad news is, you are stumped about choosing a college major.

You are not alone. Experts say a large percentage of  students enter college without a major in mind. And for the students who have picked majors, some will change their minds two to three times during their college career.

If you’re not sure, it’s okay. Here are a few simple questions to help you weigh your options:

What is Your Passion?

Since most colleges don’t require you to declare a major right away, take courses that you find interesting. Keep in mind that in some cases, a major will dictate your career. For example, by choosing nursing, engineering or accounting, your coursework will prepare you for a career in those fields.  However, some majors like English can prepare you for a wide variety of careers such as law or journalism.

Quiz Yourself

If it is too difficult to narrow down one subject that you are passionate about, there are several personality assessment questionnaires like these College Major quizzes that can help you link your personality type with the right career path. Talk with your high school guidance counselor or the career services center on your college campus about taking a personality assessment questionnaire. At the completion of the questionnaire, your personality type is matched with possible career choices.

Be a Shadow

A good way to get a firsthand look at a potential career is to shadow a professional in that field. If one day is not enough for you to get a feel for whether or not the major would be right for you, consider doing an internship.

Research

There are a variety of factors that come into play when choosing your major. For example, what is the earning potential and career growth of your chosen field? It is important to research and follow trends in the related career fields for your major. As technology continues to evolve, some jobs are becoming obsolete. Make sure that you’ve chosen a path that will be able to change with the times.

Ask the Experts

Sometimes discussing your interest with others makes it easier to determine your choice. Make an appointment with your academic advisors and counselors to discuss your strengths. They are on-hand to help and guide you closer to choosing a college major that will make you happy.
