Many times the Federal government offers financial programs to pay for college for those who join the military. How much a student can get depends on the choices they make. Generally, the greater the commitment they make to the military, the more the government will contribute to the cost of their education – even up to 100% of the cost of their education. There are many ways to get financial aid from the military. These include the following:
 

For those who complete a tour of duty, this program provides up to three years of financial aid for college, technical, or vocational school.

If you are already in the military, this program pays for classes taken during off-hours at a high school, community college, vocational school, or four-year college or university.

You may receive additional money on top of the MGIB if you are a very good student. The additional amount varies depending on the branch of service you choose.

This program lets you earn money towards your college tuition while going to school and taking military classes.

This education benefit helps pay for college for members of reserve branches of the military who get called to serve in a war or national emergency.

This bill provides benefits similar to MGIB, and you must choose between them.

Dependents' Educational Assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible relatives of certain veterans. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits include financial aid for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training.

 

Each branch of the service offers a Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP) which pays for a portion of qualified educational expenses.

 

Many branches of the military have additional special programs to help with education. The Army, for example, offers a “College First” program, and the Coast Guard has the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI).
